Summary/Abstract: The application of the new information and communication technologies in the field of tourism is a key to survival under economic crisis conditions and strong competition both in domestic and international markets. Widespread use of these technologies proved to be one of the most important tasks of the tourist business and a prerequisite for its prosperity. The creation of powerful web-based tourist information systems for accommodation, transport, and various forms of tourism that are associated with the World Wide Web is becoming a topical task for travel companies. The modern tourist information consumer wants not only to be acquainted with it in detail, but to be actively involved in the formation of a rich information environment. Moreover, the tourist business is characterized by a wide variety of information sources. The article presents certain opportunities and practical solutions for web-based tourist information systems, as a new and promising environment for the competitive tourism business. The factors for effective development of web-based tourist information systems are discussed and new trends in this direction are outlined.
