Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the Guidelines of the State Language Policy of the Republic of Lithuania approved in 2008. The said Guidelines acknowledge the role of language as part of the public culture, attitude, spiritual tradition of the nation and as a guarantee for the identity and survival of the nation. Therefore, it is necessary to analyse the needs of university students, enhance their linguistic and cultural self-awareness, improve language teaching and promote mutual understanding between students and lecturers. The article aims to discuss the needs for and possibilities of teaching language for specific purposes at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) on the basis of the questionnaire data. The object of the research is the data from the survey of full-time and part-time VGTU students (300 respondents) carried out in 2012. The results of the survey show that teaching the subject of language for specific purposes at the university is necessary; however, particular attention should be paid to academic language. Thus, students should analyse and produce as many academic texts as possible; they should also be provided with a possibility to engage in peer discussions, disputes and polemics on such texts. It should also be sought that the professor’s personality is characterised by the following traits indicated by the students interviewed: competence, communication skills, rigorousness and tolerance.
