Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the conceptions of literary experiment within the art movement of prewar modernism (1911–1914). The author addresses the context (primarily Šalda’s views on experimental art production) and the young critics’ reaction on it. Two approaches are identified as the most important for the new modernism: an experiment as the effort at the artificial form of art; an experiment as the expression of so-called “spirit of time”. The author finally compares S. K. Neumann’s and E. Taussig’s attitudes towards experimental production.
