Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the changes in one type of topic that is characteristic of the literature intended especially for female readers. Original variation approached to the genre called educational novel that should have confirmed patriarchal virtues in young female readers and critically cope with romantic dreams about different journey through life than in the role of orderly middle class wife and mother. At the turn of the 19th and 20th century this topic is brought forward from the educational novel to literary more ambitious works inspired by modernist approaches. So the career of a female artist (questioned in the first variation) proves as one of the possibilities found by female writers in order to give some hope for their frustrated heroines. Milada Součková used this popular and widespread (in that period) topic in the forties of the 20th century in her novel Bel Canto. The stability of topic provided her with the opportunity to experiment with novel structure and a narrator. She examines the ability of a literary work to express reality „in accordance with the truth“. She writes about the life story of a heroine (created from the archetypes of this topic) with the understanding for its ambiguousness and at the same time she refuses the possibility to classify some of the perspectives as „appropriate“.
