Summary/Abstract: Using the well-known underground stream Trebišnjica as a case study, the author ponders on the fate of Mt.Dinara karst streams, that underwent significant changes during the twentieth century, the problem that has not been seriously addressed yet. First, the author uses a historic approach to lay down the scientific evaluations of the Trebišnjica underground stream and its natural values; next, typical images of the stream that were used in the more recent history: a traditional image, using mythology and religious meaning to depict the landscape; then, its usage and utility to the region; further, the author presents the changes, that have occurred by adverse effects of industrial use. Finally, the complexity of karst ecosystem is brought to the spotlight - with Trebišnjica in its major role – a subject to scientific research, a task for public management and an important cultural value.
