The Bulgarian Gold. The Tobacco Trade between Bulgaria and the Third Reich (Second Part)

Summary/Abstract: Tobacco is the main export product of the third Bulgarian state. For decades it brought huge incomes for the state budget and for the people who sell the sweet-scented tobacco leaves. For political, geographical, social and cultural reasons Germany was the main consumer of the Bulgarian tobaccos. It often imported almost the entire Bulgarian production. The article reveals the organization, financing and the system of tobacco trade between Bulgaria and The Third Reich under the circumstances of state-controlled economy. Struggle for predominance, led by governments and powerful concerns, the various interests intertwined in the big deals worth hundreds of millions Reich marks and billions of levs exerted strong influence on the whole system of the bilateral trade as well as on the people who took part in the process.
