Summary/Abstract: The article argues for overcoming the form/content and text/context splits, since history and society are not extrinsic yardsticks for a work of fiction but intrinsic constituents of its structure and texture. A survey of various tendencies in ,,sociology of literature", based on a large select bibliography appended, shows that other approaches within it are an unholy alliance of technical description and ideological impressionism. They are opposed to Marxist-inspired, though as a rule unorthodox, horizons, beginning in Marx's discussion of art production and consumption as well as of different class interests, and leading, in a conjunction of scholarly sophistication and ethico-political passion, to a theory of art as Significantly determined by various societal alienations. Such a theory, today best represented in Raymond Williams and Fredric Jameson, might serve as a basis of what a sociology of literature could be. Without it, we shall be forever writing a "history of generals" as defined by metropolitan bourgeois criticism, rather than a democratic - though not value-free history of literature.
