"...To eradicate the weed of delusion". Cryptoprotestantism in the Habsburg hereditary lands and the transmigration to Transylvania

Summary/Abstract: It is argued that the transmigration of cryptoprotestants from the Habsburg hereditary lands to Transylvania in the 1750´s must be seen in the context of the re-confessionalisation of politics in the Holy Roman Empire and the emergence of the German dualism as well as in the context of the beginning of the formation of a modern centralized state in the Habsburg lands. Against this background, following the paradigma of confessionalisation, ways of trying to implant a mono- confessional state and forms of cryptoprotestant resistance that lead to their survival during centuries are discussed on the one hand. On the other hand the constitutional conditions in the Empire based on the Westphalian Peace Treaty, especially the role of the Corpus Catholicorum and the Corpus Evangelicorum, are examined.
