Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the helmet of Ivan the Terrible, one of the most well-known piece of armour, which has survived to our days since the time of the Rurik dynasty. The article deals with a number of issues of source criticism and methodology regarding the study of the possessory and pseudo Arabic inscriptions on the helmet, as well as the particularities of its decorative design and physical characteristics (size, weight). On the basis of the analysis of the key features for the attribution of the helmet and the existing concepts concerning its dating, provenance and the intended purpose, the author points out the inconsistency and the lack of scientific data on the monument, which makes it impossible to attribute it correctly at present. The author hypothesizes that the helmet of Ivan the Terrible was redecorated, and that its gilded decoration dates back to a later period than the helmet itself. The author suggests that the traditional scholarly views on the helmet of Ivan the Terrible should be reconsidered.
