Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the activities of the Pontis Foundation since its establishment (formerly Foundation for a Civil Society) until the present in the context of the development of the non-profit sector in our country since 1989 with an emphasis on the key milestones influencing its development. In the background of the process of the organisation’s formation, the text describes the role of American donors and their programmes for the development of the civil society and non-governmental non-profit organisations that the Foundation implemented in our local context. The Pontis Foundation as the successor to the US foundation played an important role as a mediator and later independent actor acquiring the knowledge and experience of US organisations. During this transition period, it was not only a passive recipient of on-going changes, but also an active actor reflecting and influencing the social development.
