Summary/Abstract: THE LIVING THE DOLL AND THE DEAD PRUS? POSITIVISM TODAY: WHAT FOR? Summary The article concerns the function of The Doll and its author, Bolesław Prus, in contemporary culture. The novel is still interesting for the readers (including the young ones), but its interpretation does not derive from the models formed many decades ago. Very few of the modern readings of Lalka, a number of which has appeared in the academia for the last twenty years, have got through to common imagery. Stereotypic perception of the novel leads to disfiguration of its sense (or even content) by unprofessional reading (as shown by the Lalka i perła by Olga Tokarczuk). The text concludes with a proposition to give Bolesław Prus back to contemporary culture, as a promoter of valuable attitudes, including the non-revolutionary social sensitivity and the opposition against the myths and phantasms binding the public life.
