On the Question of the Ethnic Mentality

Summary/Abstract: Interest in the ethnic (national) mentality has been intensified in the last two decades, judging by the number of publications which have appeared in both bourgeois and Marxist literature. The Soviet ethnographers, philosophers and historians have undoubtedly contributed to elucidating the problem from Marxist-Leninist positions. In Bulgaria it has been insufficiently worked out as yet. The present article considers certain questions connected with the interrelationship social mentality — ethnic mentality. The place of the ethnic mentality in the structure of social consciousness is established from this point of view. One of the structure-forming components of the national mentality — the national character, is analysed in greater detail and is illustrated by examples taken from folklore and ethnography.
