Summary/Abstract: This study of the traditional garments worn by the men of Marvak at the end of the 19th and the early 20th century, which accompanied those worn by the women (of the "saja" type, a sleeveless overdress open down the front) will contribute to the more complete ethnographic characterisation of the costumes of the ethnographic Bulgarian group known as the "marvaks". On the basis of terrain studies and published archive and literary sources on this matter the author makes a detailed description of the components of the traditional garments worn by the men of Marvak and emphasizes their connection with the concrete socio-economic situation. The study indicates that the garments worn by the Marvaks were the product of a socioeconomic and cultural advance in the years of the National Revival, the new phenomena in the traditional men's costume being indicated. The author emphasizes the fact that depending on the concrete socio-economic conditions in the Marvak region, the men's costumes showed greater stability as regards form, composition and components. The ethnographic studies carried out prove the Slav foundation of the Marvak men's costumes and the presence of inner differences characteristic of folk costumes in Bulgaria. The conclusion is drawn that the traditional garments worn by the Marvak men at the end of the 19th and the early 20th century belong, according to their basic signs, to the "black garment" costumes, widespread in South Bulgaria.
