Summary/Abstract: This work analyzes the phenomenon of feminization in Romanian compared to the other Romance languages and to German. The study reaches the conclusion that, in the past, the feminization was more developed in Romanian than in other European languages, but its causes were not social but linguistic (the strong tendency to motivation inside the category of grammatical gender). Nowadays, while in the Western Romance languages and in German an intense process of feminization is taking place, in Romanian the trend is to favor the generic masculine, perceived as more prestigious and then to avoid the feminine, often perceived as pejorative.
