Adverbial Modifiers of Cause and “Effect”

Summary/Abstract: A comparative analysis of the substitution classes for the adverbial of reason and the adverbial of purpose (richer and more diverse than presented in grammars), as well as an analysis from a semantic viewpoint prove the autonomous linguistic statute of each of the two classes. The adverbial of “effect” includes both the result (= a natural, nonintentional consequence of the action expressed by the governing verb) and the purpose, which is an “intended” consequence.
