Summary/Abstract: Doctoral studies in France theoretically last four years: the first year is devoted to a DEA (Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies, Thorough Studies Diploma) preparation and 3 years to the PhD realization. This paper describes postgraduate studies in France following the most recent reforms, and focuses on the research segment of the doctoral studies. The first part of the paper describes the road a doctoral student needs to cover from the degree of a graduated engineer to the degree of a doctor of technical sciences. The organization of the French postgraduate system, which is primarily based on institutions known as “doctoral schools” is described, together with the compulsory education segment, examination system and the status of the PhD students within universities or institutions where they are preparing their doctoral thesis. The second part of the paper focuses on the situation concerning PhD researchers, including their position and role in the scientific and education system, as well as their number and distribution through different fields, possibilities of financing their studies i.e. their scientific research, as well as the role of the organization representing them. The last part of the paper discusses opportunities in store for young PhDs, possibilities on offer to them, as well as their social status after they have defended their PhD thesis.
