Summary/Abstract: The veterinary profession is one of the first so-called “regulated” professions in the EU, regulated by the EU laws (the European Council Directive 78/1026/EC, related to the general system for the recognition of qualifications for veterinary medicine; the European Council Directive 2005/36/EC on professional qualifications (previously - 78/1027/EEC and 78/1028/EEC)), that is, directives on veterinary medicine training. The EU directives stipulate that formal training for veterinarians should last for at least five years during which the curriculum stated in Annex 5 item 5.4.1. from the Directive 2005/36/EC (previously 78/1027) needs to be covered through theoretical and practical classes. Bosnia and Herzegovina made a commitment to adopt and implement all EU provisions, both in the field of sanitary and veterinary medicine, as well as those concerning the veterinary profession and education. The curriculum consists of core and specific subjects. Specific subjects are grouped into the basic sciences, clinical sciences, animal production and food hygiene. These subjects are recommended either as minimal or compulsory, but depending on the needs of every individual country, other subjects can also be added. Each group of the specific subjects has a bigger number of subjects which can be offered either as a part or in addition to other courses/subjects. Specificity of the veterinary medicine studies is seen in clearly determined standards which are applied at the faculties of veterinary medicine in the EU. This means that every faculty of veterinary medicine needs to possess its own competences in the specific subjects, and this represents one of the points of evaluation in veterinary education conducted by the EAEVE (European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education) on the basis of FVE (Federation of Veterinarians of Europe) SOPs (Standard Operating Procedure) and recommendations.
