Summary/Abstract: Processes connected with globalization and regional integration create new challenges for border regions. This is due to the fact that the integration processes in the contemporary economy have increasing influence on the competition between border regions. A special role in the investigations on the development of areas which are divided by a border is played by the area of eastern borderland of Poland. The border regions, for years treated as peripheral and declining, are currently becoming areas of a more and more robust economic growth. This does not, however, apply to every border region. Cross-border location, communication routes and proximity of foreign markets do not always constitute factors of accelerated development.
