Summary/Abstract: This study examines the period of the formation of modern West European states in terms of one dimension the global geopolitical 'game' concerning the formation, maintenance and collapse of the Western Europe-centred, global colonial empires. It defines the concept of empires and suggests that their distinct network features set vector-like, overseas empires apart from contiguous, land-based types. Geopolitical activities aimed at constructing global colonial networks were key components in the formation West European statehood so the latter's character can be understood as a triple system of linkages: colonial relations, rivalry among colonising powers, and internal political dynamics.
