Summary/Abstract: Kristupas Zigmantas Pacas (1621–1684), the Chancelor of Lithuania, was the most influential politician in the second half of the 17th century. The article analyses his early letters stored in the Archives in Warsaw (AGAD, Archiwum Radziwiłłów, No.5). Most of them were written to one of his most important political rivals, Boguslavas Radvila (Koniuszy of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania), and to one of his clients, Aleksandras Hilarijus Palubinskis (Pisarz polny of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania). Political activities of Pacas have received different treatment in Polish and Lithuanian historiographies. The Polish historian Marek Szwaba wrote his PhD dissertation about Pacas, describing him as a scandalous careerist, who gave preference to his personal interests. In contrast, the Lithuanian historians treated him very positively.
