Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the Swiss–Lithuanian political, academic, art and economic relations from the earliest times till the end of the 18th century. The subject has not yet been investigated in historiography. The studies of the Lithuanian historians have been limited to the cultural relations between Lithuanian magnates and Swiss cultural centres, such as the universities in Basel and Zurich in the 16th and 17th centuries. Till the 16th century, contacts between the Swiss and the Lithuanians were rare and short-lasting. It is known that one of the amber routes, which was used to take the Baltic amber to the Roman Empire, went though the territory of the contemporary Switzerland. It is not known, however, to what extend the local people participated in that trade and whether they had contacts with the Lithuanians. Another Baltic–Swiss encounter was caused by the Crusades.
