Summary/Abstract: In the frame of the survey of the journalistic and religious style it is very important to pay a special attention to the genres. In the paper we offer a genre analysis of two main religious weeklies in Slovakia, with the special regard to the non-news materials, because the news we consider to be a separate topic and analyze it in another place. We identified an absence of the literary genres and the monotone of the analytic genres marked by the reflection, with an obvious influence of the rhetoric (sermonic) style. The journalistic style alone is widely contaminated in the religious periodicals by some other styles. The low journalistic input to the materials we can see in a weak draught to the topics, in a predominance of the “evergreen” topics over the topical ones, and a little vivid language. This all is projected to a specific genre pattern, which serves to the needs of the religious journalism, but at the same time includes also the reserves for a greater formal quality – and thus an increase of the effectiveness.
