Summary/Abstract: This literary and cinematographic study analyses the mechanisms which underlie the staging of the monstrous body in Madame Leprince de Beaumont's fairy tale The Beauty and the Beast and in its eponymous film adaptation by Jean Cocteau. It sounds out the passage process from the implicit portrait of the Beast in the text to its explicit visual expression, as well as the symbolic significance of this translation into image.
