Summary/Abstract: The author of the article, a connoisseur of Central and Eastern Europe and especially of Hungary, objectively pictures the Hungarian communist leader J. Kadar, whom his contemporaries considered a reformer. Valerii Musatov, who met Kadar at various moments in his activity, enlarges upon the role Kadar played during the events in Hungary in autumn 1956, as well as on the nature of his relations with the successive leaders of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union: N.S. Khrushchev, L. I. Brezhnev, I.V. Andropov and M.S. Gorbachev. Valerii Leonidovich Musatov has a PhD in History and is a research scholar with the Economics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Between 1964 and 1973 he worked for the Soviet Foreign Ministry and the communist party apparat, and between 1973-1984 he was a counselor and minister-counselor with the USSR’s Embassy in Hungary. Over 1984-1991 he was part of the CC of the CPSU apparat – head of sector, deputy and first deputy head of the International Section. Between 1991 and 1996 he was director of the Europe Center attached to the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Federation’s Foreign Ministry. From May 2000 until January 2006 he was the Russian Federation’s ambassador to Hungary. Author of over 70 works on the history of the Soviet Union’s relations with the East European countries and on Soviet foreign policy.
