Summary/Abstract: Why Berlin? It is the question posed by our Nobel-prize winning writer Imre Kertész, who himself provides an answer to this paradoxical question: why, as a one-time inmate of Auschwitz and the author of a universal novel about the Holocaust, did he choose to live in Berlin. With this choice he opted for a contemporary Germany able to face its role in the Holocaust, rather than Hungary where such courage is painfully lacking. This choice influences both our daily existence and today´s other choices.
