The Efforts of the Anti-Smetona Ašis Coalition to Realize Political Goals in 1938-39

Summary/Abstract: Šio straipsnio tikslas – apžvelgti ir atskleisti krikščionių demokratų, socialdemokratų, valstiečių liaudininkų ir voldemarininkų veikimo kryptis, išryškinant bendrąsias opozicinių jėgų veiklos 1938–1939 m. tendencijas remiantis Lietuvos Valstybės saugumo departamento duomenimis. Taip pat šiuo tyrimu siekiama parodyti Valstybės saugumo departamento poziciją opozicinių jėgų atžvilgiu. The aim of this article is to analyze the activities and tendencies of the opposition forces that asserted themselves in the Republic of Lithuania in 1938 and 1939. The main sources of information are documents relating to the national security of Lithuania. In 1938, opposition to the authoritarian regime of Antanas Smetona spawned a movement called Ašis (Axis) which, however, was not able to reach a consensus nor agree on a unifying program. The visions of Lithuania‘s future harbored by Christian Democrats, by supporters of Augustinas Voldemaras, and by the left wing politicians were so different that the Smetona government, with the help of national security agencies, was able to keep the opposition under its control.
