Summary/Abstract: The study deals with French lexicographic works of the second half of the 19th century. It pays special attention to three dictionaries: Dictionnaire de la langue française (1863–1873) by E. Littré, Grand dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle (1866–1876) by P. Larousse and finally Dictionnaire général de la langue française (1890–1900) by A. Hatzfeld, A. Darmesteter and A. Thomas. The paper points out innovative approaches which make these dictionaries milestones in modern French lexicography. Despite their differing focus, range and methods used to process the individual entries, the three dictionaries nevertheless share a common feature: the effort to apply a scientific approach, which is to be seen in their inner logic and order of the entries. Among other factors influencing the authors’ focus is the development of exact, positivist and experimental sciences in France in the first half of the 19th century. The paper also attempts to clarify the impact of the social situation and science in France on the conception of the selected dictionaries.
