State and Problems of the Bulgarian Wedding Today

Summary/Abstract: Certain basic aspects of the changes which have taken place in the content, structure and functions of Bulgarian weddings today are studied in this article. Owing to factors, which have influenced the development of wedding rituals under socialism, the author indicates the new socio-economic and family relations, the world outlook and spiritual needs of people. A special place is given to the nationwide and regional changes in the weddings of today. A typological characterization of the wedding is made. The new trends in its different variants are examined from an ethnographic and a socio-demographic point of view. An important conclusion is drawn: ethnic unity and originality have been preserved in Bulgarian weddings today and they have played a part in the process of national consolidation. There is a detailed analysis of the topical problems of organizing weddings. The reason for the appearance of certain negative phenomena is looked for and recommendations are made for getting rid of them. Attention is also paid to the social regulation of the processes of the present-day system of holidays and rituals and how to manage them.
