Summary/Abstract: The author attempts to analyze the identity of guilds in Transylvania by focusing on the socio-professional group, representation, the aim of the journeyman years, and the ethnic feature. Guilds, as distinct social groups within the world of Transylvanian towns, exhibit similarities to as well as differences from the craftsman corporations from the German lands, Hungary, and the Romanian Principalities. The similarities obviously bring them closer to the Western world, both regarding the used symbolism and structures, national features and the destination of the journeys. Transylvania guilds proved an exemplary model for the social mobility within the medieval society.
