Summary/Abstract: Between 2004 and 2007, several research teams have conducted field surveys in France, Romania, Brazil and Sweden on social boundaries and their production as part of family education. A joint report (Saint Martin, Gheorghiu 2007), a book (St. Martin, Gheorghiu 2010) and several articles were published from the results of these investigations. In France, the field survey took place near Paris, Strasbourg and Le Havre. This article presents part of the survey conducted in France, Noisy le Grand, with families of the working classes, middle and intermediary classes and about immigration or the institutions that are markers who separate and organize their exchanges simultaneously. The aim of the article is methodological: it tries to show the logic of work in the field, the sample selection, the use of methods of participant observation to successfully objectify social boundaries in an urban community characterized by great ethnic and cultural diversity.
