Summary/Abstract: This comparative study is based on four national case studies carried out in Serbia, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania. The case studies share a common conceptual framework and methodological approach and address similar phenomena: cultural encounters taking place in the context of projects for rural development and exchange of institutional practices. The study explores the dynamics of social change emerging on the interface between institutional cultures: the manifestations of cultural encounters, their interpretation by the actors and their effect on the environment. The findings suggest that change is not evenly spread across different dimensions of culture: it occurs first at individual level, later at organizational level and only then eventually at institutional and communal level.
