Summary/Abstract: The aim of this essay is to put under the scrutiny of the facts the hypothesis advanced recently in the literature which established e connection between the high levels of communitarianism prior WW-II and the ‘softness of Bulgarian resistance’ against the communist regime. The alternative view here advanced is that 1930s and early 1940s marked the beginning of Bulgarian economic modernization. The impressive economic growth achieved during this period should be contributed to the accelerated agrarian transformation, demographic transition and the several decades of sustained investment in human and social capital. By establishing a tridimensional network of intermediate structures of sociability Bulgarian agrarian periphery exhibited its high propensity to self-organization. This gives us convincing reasons to believe that had it not been for the accouchement of the Soviet army the ‘high levels of communitarianism’ would have doubtfully led to the extremist communist project. It is these structural changes that outline the existing potential in Bulgarian society to successfully walk the evolutionary way of development that has been followed for several decades.
