Summary/Abstract: Pig has always been a (ritual) object of the transition process. The folklore tradition and the widespread concerns about pig’s destiny after the EU accession reshaped it (also) into a (political) object of the transition process. A case study merging the folklore and post-socialist episodes of the cultural history of pig will be able to advance the analysis of the institutional changes and structurations, experienced by a post-socialist society. Drawing on the work of Marry Douglas, the author will develop a framework for institutional analysis, and will put that framework into operation by examining the „transition pig“ from an institutional point of view. That will enable him to detect certain structural faults in the establishment and operation of the Romanian institutions, thus encouraging an „anthropology of transparency“ capable of confronting such problems in a systematic and coherent way.
