Summary/Abstract: For the Czech Republic, Germany is the largest economic partner and one of strategic political partners in the European Union. The mutual relations are still burdened by the “legacy of past wrongs”. For the Czech people, this is the fall of the Czechoslovak state in 1939, prompted by the disloyalty of the German minority; and for Germans these are post-war displacements and persecutions. It would be wrong to claim that the past weighs heavily on the present Czech-German relations, which have been developing at the top and the grass-roots level alike, but occasionally the remembrance of centuries’ old coexistence of Czechs and Germans, and its dramatic end, does revive in mutual interactions.
