Summary/Abstract: Included in a study project on the influence of French language upon Romanian chromatic vocabulary, the hereby article compares the semantic, pragmatic and linguistic features of the synonymic pair cenuşiu (< cenuşă, Lat. CINUSIA < cinis) + -iu and gri (< Fr. gris). It is a case of stylistic synonymy, as one of the terms belongs to inherited vocabulary, and the other is a French-origin neologism. The study starts from the adjective Fr. gris, -e (meanings, semantic amplitude, values, specific uses, symbols), in order to see how the two Romanian synonyms share the same semantic and discursive areas and where can they be distinguished in terms of operation.
