Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the basic religious duties in Islam, precisely defined in Islamic theology. Indicating their logical interconnectedness and distribution in accordance with some form of a vertical value hierarchy, the paper begins with faith as a fundamental and indispensable point, the adoption of which represents a prerequisite for practicing other prescribed obligations. In an attempt to establish the essence of each duty, attention is given to the following points: the five daily prayers have the purpose of strengthening religious discipline and cohesion of Islam through directing believers towards the religious centre; Zakat is the mandatory provision of material goods for the benefit of vulnerable members of the community; the demanded Ramadan fast has the function of strengthening the faith and establishing the dominance of the spiritual over the material; and the Hajj represents the crown of religious life of each individual aimed at obtaining forgiveness for committed sins and strict adjustment of future behaviour according to the patterns that provide the conditions for going to Heaven. In order to prevent unilateral conclusions based on the simplicity of the duties, their coherence, and their constant movement from less demanding towards more complex ones, the paper clearly indicates that regular religious practice on a personal level continuously strengthens the faith and harmonizes all segments of life with its regulations, while on a global level it creates conditions for the unity of Islam, its strengthening, and constant expansion.
