Summary/Abstract: NATIONAL STEREOTYPES IN POLISH-UKRAINIAN BORDERLANDS FROM THE 19 CENTURY UNTIL TH PRESENT Summary In the article the question is raised of the quality of elements, actions and initiatives shaping national stereotypes in the Polish-Ukrainian borderline. The initial mutual perception was the result of social and religious differences (Greek Catholic Ruthenian peasant versus Roman Catholic Polish landowner). Arrival of nationalisms in 19th century Central and Eastern Europe lead to increasing conflicts in the borderlands as well as politization of heretofore stereotypes. As a result the mutual perceptions of Polish and Ukrainian people started to take on an extremely negative bias. In the early 1990s, after the transformation in Poland and the establishment of independent Ukrainian state a struggle started regarding the history and national symbols. The borderline in question kept some of its conflictgenerating character up until now. However, recently (in particular after the Orange Revolution) a general improvement in the quality of mutual perception has been noticeable. Trans. M. Bucholc
