Summary/Abstract: In contemporary Polish culture, one can fi nd only some remnants of old mythologies and rituals rooted in the traditional folk ceremonial. The lack of culturally institutionalized, ontologically eff ective initiation rituals at individual stages of passing from childhood to adulthood causes diff erent secondary behaviours to appear, both formal and informal ones. These behaviours include the ceremony of a youth camp participant’s “christening”. It is a quasi-initiation ritual, a modern “rite – game of passage”. The ludic character of the ceremony does not exclude it from being analysed in cultural terms, as a phenomenon of contemporary ceremonial satisfying particular cultural and social needs.
