Summary/Abstract: Smooth complexion, shining hair and a shapely figure it is a dream not only of modern woman. In the 18th century women also wanted to take care of their appearance. Instead of going to cosmetic salons, they could use medical guides and tips concerning preparation of different medicines: ointments, brews, tinctures which help keep the young and healthy look. Analysis of prescriptions from medical guides gives a glimpse of secrets of aesthetic medicine in the 18th century and shows how important a thing it was for every woman - irrespective of her social rank - to be attractive.
