Summary/Abstract: Customary law enters into various kinds of interactions with official law; for instance, it gains a major importance in the context of cultural defense, whose important element it constitutes, and this is particularly the case of ethnic minorities. Modern legal systems abound in noteworthy examples of customary law institutions. The paper presents and discusses its three selected examples. Customary law has a significant influence on the way in which official law operates in present days, and constitutes an essential element of culture of local communities. For those reasons, it should not be analyzed solely from the historical and legal angle, which has been demonstrated on the examples of relations between customary law and official law included in the paper.
