Summary/Abstract: Arecorded statement made by Karol Modzelewski at an international conference: Grotowski. Narrations (Warsaw, 14-15 January 2010) organised by the In- stitute of Polish Culture at Warsaw University and the Committee of Cultural Studies at the Polish Aca- demy of Sciences. Prof. Modzelewski recalled Gro- towski from the period prior to the latter’sinvolve- ment in the theatre – the time when Grotowski was active in the Union of Polish Youth. In doing so, au- thor shows Godowsky’sdeparture from communism and poses questions about the connection between the disappointment caused by the impossibility of al- tering the communist system and the beginning of the creative path of one of Poland’sgreatest theatre directors.
