TRAJECTORY OF ADVERBIAL “MAINTENANT” OR THE DUALISM OF A MORPHOLOGICAL CATEGORY

Summary/Abstract: Trajectory of adverbial “maintenant” or the dualism of a morphological category. The present paper is trying to demonstrate the complexity of the adverb “maintenant”, by proposing a clear distinction among its incidences. Moreover, we believe that the importance of this phenomenon comes from a certain degree of inconstancy, from its ability to reach a possible development. Therefore, our attempt is to go beyond the grammatical landscape that makes of “maintenant” a predictable temporal constituent, towards an argumentantive use, when seen as a discourse element. This change of framework observed in interviews allows us to formulate the hypothesis that, by exceeding its primary common interpretation, “maintenant” becomes a two-direction marker.
