Summary/Abstract: Process of creation and presentation of rankings should fall within rules that ensure its substantive value, methodological correctness, credibility and usefulness to the potential users. The article presents so called Berlin’s rules of rankings’ construction made in 2006 by International Ranking Expert Group. Moreover the position of university in the ranking depends on implemented ranking’s criteria that differ in national and international approach. The article presents detailed criteria used in two popular rankings in both of these 8 A. Rauhvargers, Global University Rankings and their impact, European University Association, Brussels 201,1 s. 66-67. Rankingi szkół wyższych jako narzędzia pomiaru jakości kształcenia 23 groups, that is a ranking of the Perspektywy and the Rzeczpospolita, in national ranking’s group and the Word University Ranking, in an international ranking’s group. Advisable differences in methodology of creation of these rankings lead to low position of Polish universities in world rankings. In the last part of the article there are discussion outcomes about a rankings role on the market of university services.
