Migration from central and eastern Europe: the case of Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the emigration process in Bulgaria since 1989: the scale, profile and reasons for migration; potential for emigration; and the economic, demographic and social consequences for the country and for society. Empirical data is used to shed light on patterns of people's mobility during the 1990s, as well as in the years to come. The analysis is focused not only on emigrants. The purpose is to outline the specificity of current migration from Bulgaria as a country from eastern Europe integrating into the EU and facing the challenges of the modern globalising society. Finally, some implications for the development of an adequate migration policy are given.
