Summary/Abstract: Even since the ancient times the need for knowledge and information caused great human challenges. This need for information presents several technological, economic, political or military characters. Things have not changed nowadays, and we live in an age when information is increasingly abundant and necessary. The first institutionalized military-intelligence structures emerged with the organization of the modern Romanian army after the Union of Wallachia and Moldavia. The exact date was 12 November 1859 when Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza established the Staff of the General Army, in which there also existed a section led by Lieutenant Gheorghe Slăniceanu. However, the real importance of this service results from a document dated 23 August 1911, preserved in the archives of the Ministry of National Defence, the intelligence service of the Staff of the General Army does not have today an organization that corresponds to its mission. Eugen Cristescu, one of the leaders of the Romanian Intelligence Service, was known as an opponent of the Iron Guard. The “legionaries” gave him much trouble, as they were numerous, well organized and disciplined paramilitary troops and as they reacted promptly to the orders of their leaders. Cristescu created networks among the guardsmen by sharing information with the Abwehr, so as to quickly inform his superiors on the intentions of the Iron Guard.
