Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the social-political engagement of the Bosniac religious intelligentsia in the Austro-Hungarian era. The reserach shows that this intelligentsia often had a key role in respect of all major political, social and cultural issues of that period. In the first two decades of the occupation rule members of the religious intelligentsia acted most often as the sole representatives of the Bosniac people. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century with the emergence of a layer of secular intelligentsia consisting of Bosniacs educated at various European universities that the role of the religious intelligentsia in public life began to weaken, with their representatives being gradually pushed aside to the margins of society.
