Summary/Abstract: The category "East-European Art" came to be used after the rediscovery and reassessment of the early-twentieth century Russian Avant-Garde, which was a great success in the art market and was taken up by some of the New Left movements of the 1960s. The rare constellation of critical, commercial, and political success urged dealers to find more art along the same lines, which led to the general rediscovery of the East-European Avant-Gardes, and, after the 1975 Helsinki Accords, to the general interest in contemporary art in Eastern Europe.
