Summary/Abstract: The article represents the text of a speech delivered by the President of Bulgaria at the General Assembly of the Southeast Europe Association at Erfurt on 25 February 2006. Bulgaria understands its role as being an important moving force to generate development and stability in Southeast Europe (SEE) and to help the countries of the Western Balkans to accede to the EU. A lot of concrete steps have been taken for this purpose, like – for example – the invention of so-called “Cultural Corridors” in SEE by the Bulgarian Presidency, establishing cultural, intellectual and information networks that pass over existing state boundaries. Whereas Bulgaria’s political relationship with the countries of the region has been excellent, much remains to be done to enhance economic relations that are still underdeveloped. Investing in trade and infrastructure is considered to significantly contribute to stability and security in SEE. Concerning Bulgaria’s accession to the EU, the President argues that any postponement of the accession date might strengthen anti-European forces in SEE.
