Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the formation of the first well-known medieval Slavic philosophy. Its origins can be found in the works of John the Exarch, a Bulgarian manof-letters from the end of the ninth – beginning of the tenth centry. In the translation of philosophical and theological terminology this author applied two approaches: analytic and synthetic. These two approaches led to the poetisation of dialectic and found expression in the frequent use of the concept „image“. Thus John the Exarch created a stable tradition which survived until the twentieth century and could be traced in the works of the philosophers from the so-called Russian religious Renaissance.
