U.S. POLICY TOWARDS ULTRANATIONALIST POLITICAL PARTIES IN SERBIA: THE POLICY OF NON-ENGAGEMENT EXAMINED

Summary/Abstract: In Serbia, as in much of the Western Balkans, established democracies face both a moral and political dilemma: to acknowledge ultranationalist parties’ democratic legitimacy as popularly elected actors or to isolate them as symbols of the region’s authoritarian past. In Serbia, the US has opted for the latter, erecting a cordon sanitaire similar to those employed domestically against ultranationalist parties in Western Europe. This article seeks to identify the goals underlying isolationist policies and in so doing, to gauge the extent to which such goals are being met. This is accomplished by examining current US policy towards ultranationalist political parties in the Republic of Serbia.
